Iranian Women Imprisoned for Christian Faith Print E-mail

Maryam Rustaampoor & Marzieh AmirizadehChristian persecution is not something from the ancient past. According to estimates, approximately 176,000 Christians are martyred each year worldwide. That's almost 500 deaths per day, one every three minutes.

Many Christians today suffer under the hand of Muslim governments. In Iran, two young women, Maryam Rustaampoor and Marzieh Amirizadeh, recently spent 256 days in prison because they converted from Islam to Christianity.

When pressured to recant their faith, Maryam and Marzieh refused. So they were detained at a notoriously brutal prison where they were very harshly treated, kept in solitary confinement, and endured extended interrogations. Maryam and Marzieh were released a few months ago, and received badly needed medical treatment.

Now the two women are going on trial.

This is a matter that needs addressing. Human rights don't just extend to those
favored politically or religiously. They apply to all citizens regardless of
nationality or faith. Please do the right thing and act on behalf of these
women.
